"Always Having Concerns for the Misfortunate, Reflections on Restored Citizenship" featuring Joey H. Green
Please join us as Joey H. Green reflects upon his life, incarceration, relase, restoration and now his efforts to assist others as he reaches out to the less fortunate. Experience the passion and determination that has resulted in great success and a life comitted to helping others. Joey H. Green is a Columbus native from the Linden Community. He is a homeowner, entrepreneur, husband, a father of four, and a grandfather of six. Joey has a passion for volunteering. Joey states, through volunteering he has had the opportunity to meet many interesting individuals and jump start a rewarding career. Mr. Green is a Program Coordinator with the Columbus Urban Leagues’ Reentry Program (Choose 2 Change). He is grateful for this position that has given him a platform to help others. Mr. Green is a member of the Ohio Ex Offender Reentry Coalition, the Franklin County Reentry Coalition, and he sits on an Advisory Board for the Franklin Medical Center’s inmate computer program (Administrative Office Technology). Joey states, this very same program gave him a competitive edge when he applied for jobs and promotions. One of Joey’s mission is to ensure returning citizens utilize community provide for a successful reentry, reduce recidivism, and enhance public safety. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) invites Joey to speak to inmates as his life experience and his new-found success brands him as a creditable messenger. His passion for assisting the formally incarcerated stems from his very own stay in ODRC and the job training he received from the Ohio Penal Industries. Joey served over 19 years in prison. He uses the term “served” because he utilized his time to better himself. He states he needed to fix what was broken inside of him. He truly believes that a changed mind and a changed heart can be accomplished with creating a since of hope, setting goals, utilizing community resources, and having a good support system. As well, Joey considers himself a community activist. “Always having concerns for the misfortunate”, is a motto by which he lives. During his ODRC stay, he held the positions of Management Vice President for the Madison Buckeye Jaycees. Here he supported and raised funds for other organizations such as Crayons for Kids, Coats for Kids, The Homeless Shelter, and the Battered Women Shelter. Returning home, Joey Green found community resources very valuable in reestablishing his self, and Joey is adamant about helping others to do the same! In 2017, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office presented Mr. Green with the June Community Star Award. He was also nominated for the 2018 Restored Citizen of the Year, he took on the role of Lead Navigator for the Franklin County’s First Step Resource Fair, and he was mentioned in the 2018 August addition of the Columbus Monthly Magazine.
